LANSING, Mich. – Eleven Columbus State runners are set to compete at the Region XII Championships hosted by Lansing Community College at Grand Woods Park on Saturday.
Both the men's and women's races are comprised of 18 NJCAA D1 & D3 teams. The women's five-kilometer race is set to begin at 12:00pm while the men's eight-kilometer race will begin at 1:00 pm. Last year, the men finished first of the D3 teams; however, due to injuries, the women did not have enough runners to compete as a team.
Coach Dustin Iacovone is excited that both teams will have the opportunity to score this year. "We are running against some very talented schools out of Michigan and Ohio. We will have to run very well if we want to beat these schools."
Stevie Shepherd headlines the six-woman strong team as they head into regionals. Shepherd, who won the D3 race last year, recently achieved a career-best 5k time of 20:18.9.
Adam Glass and Cody Null have lead the five-man strong team all season. Both men secured personal bests at the last meet--Glass with a time of 28:10.5 and Null with 29:02.2.
The Grand Woods Park course is grass and trails, mostly flat, with slight rolls. According to Coach Iacovone, "It's a fast course, so everyone has a chance to PR before we go to the national championships. For us, the most important thing is to run hard and come out of this meet healthy."
