COLUMBUS – The Columbus State Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams will begin competition against other Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) schools this weekend. On Saturday, the women’s team heads to Cuyahoga Community College’s Eastern Campus (Highland Hills) to take on the Challengers at 1:00 p.m., while the men’s team plays at Tri-C’s Metro Campus (Cleveland) at 3:00 p.m.
The Columbus State women’s basketball team (9-1) has had a robust start this season, dropping only a single game to the No. 11 Chesapeake College (Wye Mills, MD). The veteran squad of nine sophomores, including three transfers, will face heavy competition in the conference schedule, particularly No. 16 Owens Community College (Toledo) and No. 17 Cincinnati State Technical & Community College (Cincinnati).
Currently receiving votes in the polls, the Lady Cougars are fourth in the country in three point percentage (40%) and in the top 50 in field goal percentage and average points scored per game.
Despite the 5-8 record, the Columbus State men’s basketball team had a convincing home win against Macomb Community College (Warren, MI) with a final score of 93-72. The Cougars have played a brutal non-conference schedule that resulted in losses to ranked teams such as Danville Community College (Danville, IL), Mott Community College (Flint, MI), and Genesee Community College (Batavia, NY).
The first home conference games of the year will take place Tuesday, January 13 against Edison Community College (Piqua) with a 5:30 p.m. tip off for women and 7:30 p.m. tip off for men.
