Men’s basketball goes 0-2 at Erie tournament

BUFFALO, New York - The Columbus State men's basketball team adds two losses to its record with defeats from host Erie Community College and NCAA DIII Villa Maria College this past weekend.

Double digit offensive efforts from five Cougars weren't enough to stop Erie in overtime on Saturday. Freshmen William Prater and Matthew Gierhart led Columbus State with 20 and 19 points respectively. Gierhart also had his second double-double of the season with 11 rebounds.

Freshman Mario Young recorded 13 points and six rebounds while freshman Andre Daniels came off the bench to sink in 12 points along with four rebounds and pair of assists and steals. Freshman Dylan Geig added ten points while sophomore Grant Dierksheide chipped in nine points, including a perfect 6-for-6 at the free throw line and a team-high five assists.

Sophomore Johnnie Robinson registered a game-high three steals along with eight points and five boards. Despite a higher shooting efficiency than Erie (45.6% to 40.6%), the Cougars were simply out-scored in overtime by four points.

On Sunday, Mario Young's game-high 26 points were not enough to top Villa Maria's (Buffalo, NY) offense. Young also added six rebounds and three steals. Justin Thompson had nine points while Dylan Geig and Johnnie Robinson added eight points each.  Grant Dierksheide put up seven points while William Prater chipped in six for the Cougars.

Matthew Gierhart grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds while Robinson dished out a game-high five assists.

Villa Maria led by 12 points at the half and managed to hold the Cougars off through the remainder of the game. The Vikings sunk in 9-of-21 three-pointers for a 42.9% efficiency while Columbus State went only 2-for-16 from behind the arc for a 12.5% efficiency.

The Cougars (0-4) return to action on Wednesday, hosting Ohio State University's club team at 7:30 p.m. in the Delaware Hall Athletic Center.
