No. 10 Cougar Volleyball Finishes 3-1 at Owens Tournament

PERRYSBURG, Ohio – The Columbus State volleyball team (5-2, 2-1 OCCAC) faced tough competition at this year's Owens Tournament, finishing with two wins on Friday and splitting a pair of matches on Saturday. All four teams the Cougars competed against were DII Michigan teams.

Match #1: Columbus State 3, Henry Ford 0

In the sweep over Henry Ford Community College (Dearborn, Mich.), Allyse Rutter led the offense with eight kills and a team-high .389 attack percentage. Rutter also had her second double-double of the season with ten assists and 14 digs. Georgia Payne tallied five executions while Morgan Danec, Abigail Lucas, and Alaina Monroe each chipped in four kills. Vicki Osborne dished out a team-high 12 assists and Haley Litman led the defense with 19 digs.

 The final set scores were 26-24, 25-17, 25-21.

 

Match #2: Columbus State 3, Glen Oaks 2

All six of the returning sophomores achieved career highs in the match versus Glen Oaks (Centreville, Mich.) on Friday. Morgan Danec racked up a career-high 16 digs while Allyse Rutter achieved her first triple-double of the season, tying her career-best 15 kills to go along with 20 assists and 14 digs. Vicki Osborne logged 32 assists while Rachel Ralston dished out 15 helpers. On defense, Haley Litman scooped up 30 digs and Leah Conway recorded 11 digs.

Two freshmen had career-highs as well. Abigail Lucas totaled 12 kills on 21 swings with no errors while Georgia Payne added ten kills to the effort.

The final set scores were 22-25, 25-21, 25-17, 23-25, 15-12.

 

Match #3: Kellogg 3, Columbus State 0

Columbus State opened Saturday's play with a three set loss to Kellogg Community College (Battle Creek, Mich.). Leah Conway paced the Cougars' offense with a season-high ten kills while Allyse Rutter, Rachel Ralston, and Georgia Payne each put down five kills. Haley Litman continued her domination in the back row with a game-high 21 digs. Vicki Osborne dished out a team-high 13 helpers and scooped up ten digs for her first double-double of the season. Struggling with errors on both offense and defense, the Cougars were held to a .125 attack percentage compared to Kellogg's .309.

The final set scores were 20-25, 15-25, 18-25.

 

Match #4: Columbus State 3, Jackson 1

In the final match, the Cougars faced off with Jackson Community College (Jackson, Mich.). Morgan Danec and Abigail Lucas fired up the offense with a combined 21 kills and Vicki Osborne's 20 assists aided the offense. Haley Litman tallied 25 digs while Olivia Dunham and Allyse Rutter each chipped in 16 digs, a career-best for Dunham and season-best for Rutter. Osborne's ten digs led to her second double-double of the season while Rutter's 13 assists earned her a third season double-double.

The final set scores were 22-25, 25-14, 25-14, 25-9.

The Cougars return to action on Wed, Sep. 6 at 6:00 p.m. when they host Sinclair Community College.
