The Cougars finish strong with a conference win in four

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Columbus State Community College volleyball team bounced back this weekend after suffering two consecutive conference losses. The Cougars were defeated by Edison 3-2 and Owens 3-0 before defeating Lorain 3-1 on Saturday.  

Match 1: Edison 3, Columbus State 2

The Cougars were on the attack against the Chargers for most of the match but came up short in the fifth set. The Cougars executed 53 kills on 194 attempts for a .098 attack percentage but spent most of the match plagued by unforced errors.  

Sophomore Allyse Rutter tallied another triple - double recording 12 kills, 20 assists, and 22 digs for the Cougars.  Sophomore Libero Haley Litman led the team defensively with 30 digs while Vicki Osborne provided significant offense leading the Cougars with 21 assists.

The final set scores were 25-21, 22-25, 15-25, 25-21, 12-15.

Match 2: Owens 3, Columbus State 0

The NJCAA Division III No. 5 ranked Columbus State Cougars fought hard against the NJCAA Division II No. 2 ranked Owens Express. Much like the previous match, the Cougars continued to be plagued by unforced errors and despite being the first team this season to score more than 20 points against the Express, the Cougars fell in three. 

Sophomore Libero Haley Litman continued to excel defensively leading the team with 16 digs. In two games, Litman tallied 46 digs, while Allyse Rutter recorded another double – double with 12 assist and 12 digs for her fifth of the season.  

Sophomore Vicki Osborne finished with ten assists while Freshman Olivia Dunham added 10 digs defensively.

The final set scores were 11-25, 21-25, 17-25

Match 3: Columbus State 3, Lorain 1

The Cougars concluded the week with a conference win against Lorain County Community College. As a team, the Blue & White scooped up 100 digs, with five Cougars recording more than 10 digs. The Cougars executed 54 kills on 170 attempts for a .206 attack percentage.

Sophomore Allyse Rutter nearly had a triple - double with eleven kills, 18 assists, and 17 digs while sophomore Vicki Osborne recorded her fourth double-double with 22 assists and 10 digs for the Cougars. Sophomore Haley Litman had a great performance with a team high of 31 digs.

Sophomore Morgan Danec tallied a team high 15 kills while Freshman Abigail Lucas and Freshman Georgia Payne each totaled seven kills.

The final set scores were 25-23, 26-24, 21-25, 25-17

The Cougars return to action on Wed, Sep. 18 at 6:00 p.m. at Lakeland Community College
