Strong offensive efforts from Gierhart and Young not enough to stop No. 1 Rock Valley

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Columbus State men's basketball team (1-5) dropped a home loss to No.1 Rock Valley College (5-1) on Sunday afternoon.

Columbus State was up by one point at the half in a game that ended with nine ties and 11 lead changes. The Cougars forced 18 turnovers on Rock Valley while allowing only ten lost possessions, converted the 18 to 17 points. The Cougars were outrebounded 29 to 36 but did turn 12 offensive boards into 17 points.

The Cougars were led by freshmen Matthew Gierhart and Mario Young who scored 30 and 26 points respectively. Gierhart went 11-for-24 from the field and 7-for-7 from the line. Young shot 9-for-14 from the field and 8-for-10 from the line. Both freshmen just missed a double-double with nine rebounds apiece. Freshman Dylan Geig rounded out the double-digit scoring with 17 points as well as four rebounds.

Sophomore Johnnie Robinson added eight points, four rebounds, and four steals while Juwan Demmings chipped in seven points, four assists, and two rebounds.

The Cougars break for Thanksgiving and return to the court on Sat, Dec. 3 when they play Mott Community College in Flint, Michigan.
