Men’s basketball picks up conference win over Lorain County

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Columbus State men's basketball team (3-8, 2-2 OCCAC) secured their third win of the season over Lorain County Community College (9-3) on Wednesday evening. The Cougars, up by as many as 39 points, led 53-17 at the half and held Lorain County to a 14.6 field goal percentage. In the second half, the Commodores emerged stronger and with Columbus State's lackadaisical defense, narrowed the deficit to 16 points to close out the game 97-81.

Conference Player of the Week Mario Young led with a career-best 32 points and ten rebounds. Young shot 67% (12-for-18) from the field and 89% (8-for-9) from the line. The freshman also dished out three assists and did not commit a single turnover in 36 minutes of play.

Rodney Willis collected his first double-double of the season with 21 points and a team-high 13 rebounds. Willis also had a game-high seven assists and a pair of blocks and steals. Dylan Geig scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds while Johnnie Robinson tallied 11 points, four assists, and three steals. Matthew Gierhart and Grant Dierksheide each chipped in ten points.

Andre Daniels pulled down three rebounds and added two assists and one steal to the win.

The Cougars break for the holiday and return to practice the week of Jan. 2. The first contest of the New Year is scheduled for Wed, Jan. 11 at home against Lakeland Community College.
