WESTFIELD, Massachusetts - The Columbus State cross country team is gearing up for the NJCAA DIII Cross Country National Championships, to be held at Stanley Park on Saturday, November 3. The men's 8k race will begin at 10:00 a.m. while the women's 5k race is set to start at 11:15 a.m. The results will be posted on coolrunning.com and on the NJCAA website.
Last year, Columbus State had a top-30 finish. However, after a Region XII Runner-Up finish and a recent ascent in the polls, the Cougars are hopeful for a top-five finish at the meet. Since arriving at onsite Wednesday, the team is has been working hard and according to Coach Dustin Iacovone, "this is the most talented team I've brough to the national meet. They all see the opportunity in front of them."
The men's team, ranked fourth nationally in the latest USTFCCCA poll, has been anchored by the duo of freshman Kyle Roach and sophomore Aaron Kennelly. Kennelly was the second Cougar to cross the finish line at nationals last year. Returners Laithe Abu-Obeid and Anthony Gripper scores also contributed to the effort.
Due to the good week of practice thus far, Coach Iacovone is looking forward to Saturday and is already proud of his team. "I'm proud of the effort they have put in this season, how close they have become as a team, and the terrific team culture they have created. No matter what happens I'm proud of this group of athletes."
